Internet
Worldwide collection of networks that links millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals

Internet Evolution
The Internet originated as ARPANET in September 1969 and had two main goals :
1. Allow scientists to share information and work together
2. Function even if part of the network were disabled or destroyed by a disaster


Connecting To The Internet
Wired
Device physically attaches via a cable or wire to a communications device
Example : Cable Internet Service, FTTP, etc

Wireless
Device without a communications device
Example : WiFi, Broadband, hot spot, etc

Internet Service Provider
Business that provides individuals and organizations access to the Internet free or for a fee.
Example : Unifi, TM, Celcom, etc

IP address
Sequence of numbers that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet

Domain Name / Top Level Domain
A text-based name that corresponds to the IP address

DNS Server 
Translates the domain name into its associated IP address

World Wide Web (www) / Web
Consists of a worldwide collection of electronic documents (webpages)

Website
A collection of related webpages and associated items.



Web Server
A computer that delivers requested webpages to your computer.


Browser
Application that enables users with an Internet connection to access and view webpages on a computer or mobile device.

Home Page
The first page that a website displays.

Web Address / URL
A webpage that has a unique address.

Web App
An application stored on a web server that you access through a browser. 
Example : webmail, online auction

Web Publishing
The development and maintenance of websites.


What is Multimedia ?
Randomly, it refers to any application that combines text with :

1. Graphics 
Digital representation of non-text information

2. Animation
Appearance of motion created by displaying a series of still images in sequence

3. Audio
Includes music, speech, or any other sound which compressed to reduce file size

4. Video
Consists of images displayed in motion

5. Virtual Reality
Use of computers to simulate a real or imagined environment that appears as a 
3-D space.

Ever heard about Plug-in ?
A plug-in is a program that extends the capability of a Web browser

E-mail. Well, sounds familiar huh ?
Email is the transmission of messages and files via a computer network. An e-mail program allows you to create, send, receive, forward, store, print, and delete email messages. An e-mail list is a group of email addresses used for mass distribution of a message

How E-mail travel from sender to receiver ?

1. Instant messaging (IM)
A real-time Internet communications service.

2. Chat
A real-time typed conversation that takes place on a computer or mobile device.

3. Chat Room
A website or application that permits users to chat with others who are online at the same time.

4. Discussion Forum
An online area in which users have written discussions about a particular subject.

5. VoIP (Voice over IP)
Enables users to speak to other users over the Internet.

6. FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
An Internet standard that permits file uploading and downloading to and from other computers on the Internet.

7. Netiquette
The code of acceptable Internet behavior.
