CHAPTER 3 - COMPUTERS AND MOBILE DEVICES

Types of Computers
1. Desktop and mobiles
2. Servers and terminals
3. Smartphones, digital cameras, e-book readers and portable media players
4. Game devices
5. Embedded computers

Personal Computer
Computer that can perform all of its input, processing, output, and storage activities by itself and is intended to be used by one person at a time.

Desktop
Computer that was designed to be in a stationary location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk or table.

Laptop

Thin, lightweight mobile computer with a screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base

Tablet
Thin, lightweight mobile computer that has a touch screen.

Handheld Computer
Small enough computer to fit in one hand.

Server
A computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or devices on a network.

Mainframe

A large, expensive, powerful server that can handle hundreds or thousands of connected users simultaneously.

Supercomputer
This computer is the fastest, most powerful and the most expensive.
"A Chinese supercomputer has retained the crown of world's fastest supercomputer, beating competitors from both Japan and the US"

Differences between a server and supercomputer

Terminal Computer
Limited processing power, that enables users to send data to and/or receive information from a server, or host computer.

Types of Terminal Computer

1. Automated teller machine (ATM)
2. Self-service kiosk

Cloud Computing
An environment of servers that house and provide access to resources users access through the Internet.

Types of Mobile Devices

1. Smart phone - Internet-capable phone

2. Digital Camera - Take photos and store the photographed images digitally

3. Portable media player - Can store, organize, and play or view digital media

4. E-book reader - Used primarily for reading e-books and other digital publications

Types of Game Devices

Ports and Connectors
Ports - Point which peripheral device attaches to or communicates with a computer or mobile device.
Connectors - Joins a cable to a port.

USB Port

Wireless Communications Technologies
Connecting computers and mobile devices to peripheral devices without a cable

How To Protect Your Hardware ?

1. Surge protector - Provide a stable current flow and minimize the chances of an over voltage reaching the computer

2. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) - Contains surge protection circuits and one or more batteries that can provide power during a temporary or permanent loss of power

Health Concerns of Using Technology
1. Repetitive strain injury
2. Computer vision syndrome
3. Ergonomics
4. Technology addiction
